The Arena brand was founded in 1973 by the son of a sports visionary, Horst Dasler. During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Dassler was at the pool when Mark Spitz won his historic 7 gold medals. In 1973, the Arena brand introduced its first line of swimwear. The key to the brand's success was signing individual contracts with athletes for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Sponsored athletes included Mark Spitz, Novella Calligaris, Steve Furniss, David Wilke, Shirley Babashoff, Gary Hall, Klaus Dibiasi, and Ulrika Knape.
